Terms of use

The agreement, in language you can actually read.

These terms are a contract, so parts of them read like one. Where we can say something plainly we have, and the three clauses most people would want to know about are at the top rather than buried.

Last updated 19 August 2026. Between you and SSDittah Innovations LLP, No 60A, Artha Reviera, Chandapura Anekal Main Road, Marasur, Anekal, Bangalore 562106, Karnataka, India ("we", "us"). By installing or using KnownSquare, you agree to these terms.

The three that matter

We cannot get your account back for you. There is no password to reset, because we hold nothing that identifies you. Recovery runs through the key you printed and the people you chose to trust. If you lose both, the account and everything on that phone are gone permanently, and nobody at KnownSquare can undo it.

We cannot read what you send, which also means we cannot moderate it. You are responsible for what you send and for who you let in.

The paid membership unlocks organising, nothing else. Messaging, media, the Locker, safety features and account recovery are free and always will be. If a payment lapses, you never lose access to your own data.

1. What KnownSquare is

KnownSquare is a messaging application in which connections are made only by mutual acceptance, in person by scanning a code or remotely through an introduction from a shared contact. Messages are encrypted end to end. We operate a relay that carries encrypted material between devices and deletes it once delivered.

You must be at least 13 to use KnownSquare. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms on your behalf, and should be set up as a guardian on the account.

2. Your account

Your account is a cryptographic key created on your device. There is no username or password. Whoever controls the device and the key controls the account, so keeping your phone locked and your recovery key safe is your responsibility.

One device may use an account at a time. Moving to a new phone replaces the old one, which is then revoked.

3. Recovery, and its limits

This section is unusual, so read it. Because we hold no identifier for you, we have no way to verify that you are you, and therefore no way to restore your account. There is no support process that can override this, and any person or website claiming otherwise is attempting to defraud you.

Recovery is possible only through the mechanisms the app provides: the recovery key you were asked to write down and keep, and the trusted contacts who each hold a share of it. Losing the printed key and lacking enough trusted contacts means the account cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.

Messages and documents live on your phone. Unless you have turned on encrypted backup, losing or wiping the phone loses them.

4. How you may use it

You agree not to use KnownSquare to break the law, to harass, threaten or defraud anybody, to distribute material that sexually exploits children, to infringe someone else's rights, or to attack the service or its users, including by automated account creation, reverse engineering intended to defeat security, or interfering with the relay.

Because we cannot read message content, we cannot review it. Where we receive a report or detect abuse at the network level, the actions available to us are limited to the account: rate limiting, suspension or termination. We may also refuse service to devices that fail platform integrity checks, which is one of the few defences a network without accounts has against bulk abuse.

5. Other people

You decide who to accept, and introductions you make are your judgement, not ours. A name and photograph shown in the app are asserted by that person and are not verified by us. Verified organisation badges, where they appear, are issued by us under a documented process, and their meaning is described in the app; they indicate that we checked an organisation's identity, not that we endorse its conduct.

6. Features that record money

Shared expenses, splits and settlements are a record kept between people, and nothing more. KnownSquare does not hold, transfer, process or refund money between users, is not a payment service, and takes no part in any dispute about a debt between them. Marking something as settled is a statement made by the people involved.

7. What it costs

KnownSquare is free, and there is nothing to buy today. No paid features exist yet and the app takes no payment.

If a paid membership is introduced later, it will unlock the ability to share organising duties, being co-hosts on plans and additional administrators in groups, and nothing else. Messaging, voice notes, photographs, documents, the Locker, plans, lists, safety features and account recovery stay free. We will not move any of those behind payment.

Payment, when it exists, will be taken by Google Play or the Apple App Store under their terms, with renewals, cancellations and refunds managed there. These terms will be updated before that happens, and the date at the top will change.

8. Availability

We try to keep the service running and will not always succeed. It is provided as it is, without any warranty, and we do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, that messages will always be delivered promptly, or that it is fit for any particular purpose.

9. Liability

Nothing here limits what cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, and for fraud.

Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for lost data, and our total liability to you for everything arising in any twelve month period is limited to the greater of what you paid us in that period and ₹5,000.

Two exclusions matter more here than the boilerplate around them, because of what this app is for. We are not responsible for what other people do: a person you accepted, a message they send, money you send anyone, or a decision you take because of something you read in the app. And the safety features are aids to your judgement, not a guarantee of safety. A guardian, a hold on a recovery, a locked channel and a warning before a link all raise the cost of an attack. None of them can stop somebody who is determined to be persuaded, and we do not claim they do.

10. Ending it

You may delete your account at any time from within the app, which removes the records we hold about it. We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches section 4, or where required by law. Sections 6, 8, 9 and 11 survive termination.

11. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts at Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

12. Changes

We may update these terms. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, and the date above will change. Continuing to use KnownSquare after that means you accept the revised terms.

Draft for legal review. Sections 8 and 9 are deliberately unfinished: warranty and liability wording is exactly what a lawyer should write, and copying somebody else's is how companies end up with clauses that do not hold.
